Today, using the Dewey Decimal Classification system or DDC in teaching
presents a myriad of variables. Some teachers have automated libraries;
others do not. Still other teachers need greater online access. But,
there are some outcomes to consider regardless the grade level and
technological status:
1. The learner outcome should mean the student leaves the DDC with a book
or online item. A student with a book or computer printout in hand has
proof the system works.
2. Learner outcomes should result in the sharing of information.
Sharing information can be in the form of an e-mail, report or web log.
Our challenge in the "Information Revolution" is to make sure that
knowledge has practical application.
3. Teachers and School Library Media Specialists should strive to
use the DDC and the Internet as tools for "curriculum integration."Examples:
--A lesson on state government can make good use of the DDC or school library
catalogue for locating information.
--A lesson on famous mathematicians is another good example of integrating
curriculum: math, history and media center skills.
--The possibilites are endless.
