1101,1102 Elementary French
French In Action chapters 1-13
French In Action chapters 14-26

The acquisition of oral/aural skills through intensive exposure to French used both as the medium of communication and the object of study. It enables the student accurately to express his or her daily experiences in spoken and written French, and to understand communications of a moderate level of difficulty. These courses satisfy a basic liberal arts requirement for Foreign Language

1123 The French-Speaking World
An examination of French speaking countries outside of Europe--especially Africa and the Caribbean--prior to, during , and after the establishment of French colonial rule. Special attention is given to the ways different cultures have reacted, in economic, religious, sociological, artistic, and literary spheres, to the experience of French hegemony.
This course is taught in English. It satisfies a Global Perspective and/or Humanities requirement. Cross listed with Cross Cultural Studies 1123.

1131 The Culture of France
A study of influences that have molded France through the ages, with insights into all aspects of French culture (geography, history, the arts, folklore, gastronomy,etc.) as reflected in the main provinces (Ile-de-France, Normandy, Burgundy, Brittany, Provence, the Basque Country.)
This course is taught in English. It satisfies a Humanities requirement.

2211 The Francophone World and the Media
A review and expansion of grammar, practice in oral and written French through the study of various Francophone media.
Prerequisite: French 1102 or the equivalent. It satisfies a Foreign Language requirement.

2212 France and the European Union
A review and expansion of grammar, practice in oral and written French through the study of France's political and economical situation within the European Union.
Prerequisite: French 2211 or the equivalent. It satisfies a Foreign Language requirement.

2265/2266 Special Topics in French
The study of a selected topic in the discipline. Different topics are chosen for each offering, based on students' interests and needs. Course offerings include:

  • Le Français par la chanson (French Through Songs)
  • Cinema for French Conversation
  • "Out of Africa": Short Stories and Films from the French-Speaking World. 
  • 3301 Introduction to the Study of French Literature I
    Themes and topics related to periods and genres in French literary history. The course covers particular areas from the Medieval period through the Enlightenment.

    Prerequisite: French 2211 or 2212 or the equivalent. It satisfies a Foreign Language and/or Humanities requirement.

    3302 Introduction to the Study of French Literature II
    Themes and topics related to periods and genres in French literary history. The course covers Romanticism to the present.

    Prerequisite: French 2211 or 2212 or the equivalent. It satisfies a Foreign Languages and/or Humanities requirement.

    3310; 4410 Advanced Studies in French
    A course designed for upper-class French majors, with a different topic dealing with aspects of the French or Francophone literature or culture each semester. Course offerings include:

  • Le Cinéma français
  • L' Autobiographie en France
  • La Littérature française contemporaine comme prière athée
  • La Littérature féminine francophone
  • Le Théâtre classique
  • Les Femmes-écrivains du Moyen Age au XVIIIè siècle
  • La Poésie 
  • Phonétique et Grammaire avancée
  • Prerequisite: French 3301,3302, or permission of the instructor.
    3320 French/English Translation
    Practice in the art of rendering a text from one language to another using both literary and nonliterary sources. This will include a study of advanced French grammar.
    Prerequisite: French 2212, or permission of the instructor.

    3330 L'Actualité française (French Through Current Events)
    Practice in comprehending, writing, and speaking the French language through the reading of newspapers and study of various media (TV programs, French web sites, etc.). Special emphasis is placed on French contemporary culture and issues. Course taught in French

    Prerequisite: French 2212 (or instructor permission)

    2265; 2266; 3365; 3366; 4465; 4466 Special Topics in French
    The study of a selected topic in the discipline. Different topics are chosen for each offering, based on students' interests and needs. Recent course offerings include:

  • FR 2266: L'Actualité Française (niveau intermédiaire)
  • 2295; 2296; 3395; 3396; 4495; 4496 Internships in French
    Supervised field experiences in appropriate settings, usually off-campus, designed to assist student in acquiring and using skills and knowledge of the discipline unique to the selected topic.

    2298; 2299; 3398; 3399; 4498; 4499 Independent Studies in French
    Directed study planned and conducted with reference to the needs of those students who are candidates for departmental honors. Qualified students who are no candidates for such honors but who desire to do independent studies are also admitted with permission of the Department.
    NOTE: all of the above courses are four (4) credits toward graduation with the exception of internships and independent studies which can be zero (0) to four (4) credits.
