The Spanish House is an affinity house whose
purpose is to provide students with an opportunity to practice the
Spanish language outside the classroom. Students majoring in Spanish
who cannot spend a semester in a Spanish-speaking country are required
to live at least a year in the Spanish House in an environment which
fosters acquisition of language fluency and a knowledge of Hispanic
culture.
A Spanish native exchange student lives in the house
and serves as house director to organize activities and to practice
everyday conversation and casual discussion with students living in the
house. Students meet on a regular basis for an activity (conversation,
games, movies, meals, TV programs, etc.) to develop their language
skills, away from the pressure of the classroom. Many activities are
organized in cooperation with the Spanish Club. The Spanish House
receives Spanish TV programs from TVE (Televisión
española) on Channel 28.
