Research and teaching interests
My graduate work concentrated on the Spanish Golden Age,
and I particularly enjoy re-reading and re-teaching
Cervantes's Don Quixote. My most recent research has been on
Spanish cinema. In Cain on Screen: Contemporary Spanish
Cinema (Scarecrow Press), I analyzed the transformation
in filmic representation of the Spanish Civil War and its
aftermath. My latest study, Contemporary Spanish Film
from Fiction (Scarecrow Press) is on screen adaptations
of Spanish narratives written after 1939. I have also
recently translated into English Adelaida García
Morales's El sur/Bene (University of Nebraska Press).
In April of 2000, I was honored to receive Western Maryland
College’s Ira G. Zepp Distinguished Teaching Award.
Hobbies
I enjoy taking walks on country roads, gardening,
listening to music, cooking, talking with friends over
dinner, watching Tar Heel basketball games, and doing Tai
Chi.
