A minimum of twenty-four hours is required to complete a minor in French, German or Spanish. Students may earn up to twelve credits toward a minor through the McDaniel College administered placement examination, which is taken before beginning classes as a Freshman. Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor.

Minor in French (24 hours)

Course regular offerings include:
  • French 1101: Elementary French I (4 credits)
  • French 1102: Elementary French II (4 credits)
  • French 2211: The Francophone World and the Media (4 credits)
  • French 2212: France and the European Union (4 credits)
  • At least one course at the 3000-level. (4 credits)
  • Students may choose to take a culture course taught in English among the following offerings:
  • - French 1123: The French-Speaking World (4 credits)
    - French 1131: Culture of France (4 credits)
    Note: Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor.

Minor in German (24 hours)

  • German 1101: Elementary German I (4 credits)
  • German 1102: Elementary German II (4 credits) 
    • or German 1103: Elementary German for Advanced Beginners (equiv. of GER 1101 & 1102).
  • German 2211: Intermediate German I: Language and Culture (4 credits)
  • German 2212: Intermediate German II: Conversation and Composition (4 credits)
  • Students may choose to take a culture course taught in English among the following offerings

  • - German 1111: German Cinema (4 credits),
    - German 1125: From the Holocaust to German Unification (4 credits),
    - German 1131 Culture of German-Speaking Countries (4 credits).
    - a course taught in another department if the course is exclusively about German-Speaking countries
    Note: Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor.
  • At least one 3000-level course. (4 credits)

Minor in Business German (24 hours)

  • German 1101: Elementary German I (4 credits),
  • German 1102: Elementary German II (4 credits), 
    • or German 1103: Elementary German for Advanced Beginners (equiv. or GER 1101 & 1102). 
  • Students may choose to take a culture course taught in English among the following offerings:

  • - German 1111: German Cinema (4 credits),
    - German 1125: From the Holocaust to German Unification (4 credits),
    - German 2231: Women in German Literature and Society, (4 credits)
    - German 1131: Culture of German-Speaking Countries (4 credits).
    - a course taught in another department if the course is exclusively about German-Speaking countries
    Note: Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor.
  • German 2221: Principles of German for Business (4 credits).
  • German 3331: German for International Business (4 credits).
  • At least one additional 3000-level course (4 credits).

Minor in Spanish (24 hours)

  • Spanish 1101: Elementary Spanish I (4 credits)
  • Spanish 1102: Elementary Spanish II (4 credits)
  • Spanish 2211: The Hispanic World: Language and Society I (4 credits)
  • Spanish 2212: The Hispanic World: Language and Society II (4 credits)
  • At least one 3000-level course (4 credits). 
  • Students may choose to take a culture course taught in English among the following offerings:

  • - Spanish 1125: Studies in Hispanic Literature in English Translation (4 credits),
    - Spanish 1131 Cultural History of Spain (4 credits),
    - Spanish 2223 Cultural History of Latin America (4 credits).
    Note: Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor.
