Transition Devices
The words and phrases on this list can be used to effect transition in
the suggested situation.
To indicate addition:
again, also, and, and then, besides, equally important, finally, first,
furthermore, in addition, last, likewise, moreover, next, too, nor, in
the first place
To indicate cause and effect:
accordingly, as a result, consequently, hence, in short, otherwise, then,
therefore, thus, truly, so, it follows that
To indicate comparison:
in like manner, likewise, similarly, in such a manner, and, also, again
To indicate concession or contrast:
admittedly, after all, although, although this may be true, and yet, at
same time, but, for all the, however, in contrast, in spite of, nevertheless,
notwithstanding, on the contrary, on the other hand, still, yet, otherwise,
but, doubtless, conversely, contrarily
To indicate illustration or examples:
for example, for instance, incidentally, indeed, in fact, in other words,
in particular, specifically, that is, to illustrate, such as, like, as
an example, consider as an illustration
To indicate summary:
in brief, in conclusion, in short, on the whole, to conclude, to summarize,
to sum up, in sum, in any event
To indicate time relations:
after a short time, afterward, as long as, at last, at length, at that
time, at the same time, before, earlier, of late, immediately, in the
meantime, lately, lately, later, meanwhile, presently, shortly, since,
soon, temporarily, thereafter, thereupon, until, when, while, after a
while, next, then, finally, last
To indicate place:
nearby, here, beyond, opposite to, in the foreground, further back, in
the distance, adjacent to
To achieve emphasis:
chiefly, equally, indeed, even more important
To restate:
in short, that is, in effect, in other words, as I have said, as has been
noted
