Plotting Separation With The Aid of Schiller
By: Chava Roth

She plans to enjoy her new-found freedom.
She’ll take Elizabeth as a mentor –
spurn love
in favor of power,
choose her liaisons in work and play
with the cold calculation
usually permissible only in a man.

She might even be Mary, too –
the half-willing temptress,
lured by vanity
but withheld by virtue,
pitying her pursuers
for their inflamed souls,
even on the scaffold she had the last word.

“Help me to open my heart
that I might win yours” –

nay, no longer.
To survive him
is only to claim the protection of statistics –
he’ll go down knowing
she succeeded him.

The choice, you see,
was yours –
the decision, mine.
