Terry Dalton's First-Year Seminar Class Students in Terry Dalton's first-year seminar, "Journalism in the 21st Century: the Real Story," get to spend almost every Thursday class meeting with one or more professional journalists. Dalton has been luring editors, photographers, reporters, columnists, editorial cartoonists and TV news anchors, news directors and reporters to campus since he first offered the course in 2000. "I love to see the magic that can happen when today's journalists meet tomorrow's," says Dalton. "Students who often have a negative opinion of the press usually wind up rethinking their views after 90 minutes of listening to and questioning these guest journalists." The students also rate the journalists on a scale of 1 to 10, ten being a "truly outstanding speaker." Last year's winner was Mike Preston, sports columnist for the Baltimore Sun.
