Description of Evaluation Levels


A (Superior)—Writing characterized by outstanding achievement of the following standards:
* Writing which engages the readers on every level (i.e. intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, physically . . . )
* Writing in which an honest, mature style and voice are communicated effectively
* Writing which demonstrates involvement and growth in all stages of the writing process and the capability for self-criticism
* Writing which is notable for organization, coherence, clarity, development, and support
* Writing which demonstrates well-developed sensitivity to audience and purposes
* Writing which demonstrates good control of language, without errors, and showing effective diction and mature sentences

B (Very Good)—Writing characterized by good achievement of the following standards:
* Writing which interests the reader
* Writing which demonstrates a developing personal voice and style
* Writing which demonstrates effective revision and editing skills
* Writing which is well-organized, coherent, and clear
* Writing which is well-developed and well-supported
* Writing which adjusts well to a variety of purposes and audiences
* Writing free of distracting surface errors

C (Good)—Writing characterized by satisfactory achievement of college-level standards:
* Writing which is focused, purposeful, and sensitive to audience
* Writing which is reasonably well-organized, coherent, and clear
* Writing with adequate development and support
* Writing which is increasingly free of surface errors
* Willingness to work at all stages of the writing process


D (Weak)—Writing characterized by significant problems in areas such as:
* Development and support of ideas
* Awareness of audience
* Effective organization
* Control of language
