Four Day Weeks at Flagship Southwest Schools
Links to spreadsheets showing the percentage of courses that
meet on Friday are given below. Four schools do respectably in the
traditional way (over half the time using MWF classes), Arkansas, Colorado,
Kansas and Missouri. The rest of the schools are significantly
lower, ranging from 42 to 32 percent. While this is evidence of considerable
growth of MW classes, these schools still have class on Friday much more than most
schools in the Ivy League and some of the elite liberal arts schools. While
the flagship schools are not as selective as the more elite schools they are
more selective than other state schools and they seem to be resisting the four
day week. I have already documented some
very poor use of Fridays at some more common state schools, esp. in California
where we have nearly the lowest flagship school, UCLA. Still, I think it noteworthy to see the
more selective state schools are doing better at preserving Friday as a class
day. This suggests that they believe
that class on Friday is important even if you have strong students.
