Principles of Biology Seminar
BIO 1111FR

About the course: This is a special section of the regular Principles of Biology course, which is taken by Biology and other science majors. Each freshman at Western Maryland is required to take one Freshman Seminar course. The College offers a variety of these, and a student is not required to take one offered in his/her own major. (My older son took one on ghost stories in literature as a freshman. He just graduated with a major in Philosophy. My younger son is taking one this fall on light and color.) My course is atypical of the freshman seminars because it is open only to science majors, though it's not required of them.

Class size is limited to 15, and there are certain requirements and activities that differ from those in the other sections of Principles of Biology, the ones that aren't Freshman Seminar sections. One thing that is the same is the laboratory. Students in my section register separately for a laboratory section, in which they are mixed with folks from other sections of the course.

The course description of Principles of Biology in the college catalog includes:

Unifying concepts of species and adaptations of species to change. The first semester is an overview of cell biology including cell structure, cell metabolism, cell reproduction, enzyme action, DNA, protein, and genetics. ...The laboratory emphasizes basic techniques and is an integral component of [the] semester.

That's what we'll do together -- study cells, genetics and evolution.
