Courses and Descriptions

Undergraduate:

BIO 1112- Principles of Biology II

Unifying concepts of species and adaptations of species to change. The first semester is an overview of cell biology including cell structure, cell metabolism, cell reproduction, enzyme action, DNA, protein, and genetics. Adaptations at the organismic level are investigated in the second semester with the emphasis on maintenance and control systems as they evolved for organisms to live in various habitats. The labratory emphasizes basic techniques and is an integral component of each semester. Students will design and implement their own experiment in the lab section of this course.

Prerequisites: BIO 1112, Mathamatics 0001 or 0003

Offered: Every spring semester

BIO 1115- Human Heredity: A User's Guide

Human genetics and evolution for the non-science major. Themes of the course include our own heredity, the technology of cytogenetics and genetic engineering that enables us to study and, in some cases, to manipulate genetic material, the genetic basis of evolution theory, and the assessment of such information as reported to the public.

Prerequisites: Mathamatics 0001 or 0003

Offered: Every spring semester

BIO 2203- Genetics

A study of the concepts of classical and contemporary genetics. The action of genetic mechanisms at vartious levels of biological organization (molecular, cellular, organismal, and population) and in a variety of cells and organisms in included.

Prerequisites: BIO 1112, Mathamatics 0001 or 0003 and Mathamatics 0002 or 0004

Offered: Every spring semester multiple sections

BIO/ PHY 2250- Bioethics

A study of ethical issues in biology and medicine including health care policies, euthanasia, scientific fraud, and reproductive technologies. This course will explore these and similar issues and case studies and create a framework for ethical decision making based on philosophical principles.

This course does not satisft the natural science and mathematics requirement

Offered: Alternating Fall Semesters (even years)
