Attendance: Mandatory.

Random attendance will be taken. If you miss more than three (3) lectures with unexcused absence, your final grade will be dropped one letter category. Acceptable excuses for missing class: illness requiring visit to Smith House (I will randomly check to see if you had an appointment. Smith House will not divulge the reason for your visit to me -- I will respect your privacy!); official school activity such as sports event or field trip. Any other reason will count as one of your three absences. You are responsible for getting notes if you miss class.

IF you must miss an exam, arrangements must be made in advance to take the test at another time. No exam makeups will be allowed if you call on the DAY* of the exam -- unless Smith House confirms that you were TOO ill to take the test. Also, think about the grading policy below; if you choose NOT to take one exam and have B average on all assignments &endash; you would probably earn a C for the semester with one exam score of zero. *My definition of "Day of exam" means you must contact me by 4:00 pm on day BEFORE test date &endash; in other words a 3:00 a.m. phone call on my voice mail is too late.

Honor Code:

I expect all students to observe the honor code and be responsible for their own work. The honor pledge should appear on all exams and assignments. (I pledge that all work on this exam/paper/presentation is my own.) As a faculty member, I will work to prevent opportunities to cheat on exams. I will expect you to report violations to myself, or your academic advisor. This may be done anonymously. The important point here: we ALL must participate to have an honor code work.

Grading:

Keep all your tests and graded materials. This will allow you to calculate your grade at any point in the semester. Your lab instructor will turn your lab grade into me; this will be added to the lecture grade and one single grade for lab and lecture will appear on your grade report. I give you the following breakdown to judge your performance &endash; I will NOT calculate "how many points you need in order to reach a grade of "x"".

Four exams @ 100 pts each 400 (41% of total grade)

Final exam @ 100 pts 100 (10%)

Lab grade (12 labs @ 20 pts) 240 (24%)

Projects and Presentations

Geneology Project 10 (1%)

Student Presentation 120 (12%)

Disease papers (2 @ 60 pts) 120 (12%)

TOTAL Points: 990
