Class Ulvophyceae

The Ulvophyceae includes many marine organisms that take a variety of shapes that may consist of a few cells, long filaments, thin sheets of cells, or coenocytic cells. During mitosis, the nuclear envelope and the mitotic spindle persist, as they do in the Charophyceae.

  • Species have sporic meiosis so that an alternation of generations ( haploid & diploid) exists.
  • These most marine species tend to have the most complex morphology, with 3D parenchymatous-like tissue
  • Motile cells have their flagella arranged like the chlorophyceae described above. When present, there can be two or more apical flagella.

Orders include"

1. Ulvales - sea lettuce is commonly found washed up on beaches so you have encountered in your wanderings

In this slide of Ulva ( sea lettuce) you can note the parenchymatous morphology; flat thallus 2 cells thick and up to a sizable meter long

2. Order Ulotrichales genus Ulothrix

- we need to get some info here !!

We'll Study it further in lab.....
