Lycopods: Seleginella

 

Although this Selaginella doesn't look much different from some of the mosees or leafyl iverworts, you can see the true leaves are
thicker. They are considered microphylls are there is only 1 vein per leaf.

Spore Production:

In Seleginella we see the evolution of heterospory, with the production of both megaspores and microspores....remember the production of 2 spore types permits different gametophytes, lowers probability of self -fertilzation and eventually in the gymnosperm lines, the ability of the' female' gametophyte to be retained on the
sporophyte for protection and food resources.
