Moneran and Protist

Organisms of the Moneran Kingdom may be either harmful or helpful to other organisms. Most of the publicity given to bacteria is negative and often refers to illness. But, ironically only a few bacteria are disease causing. Many bacteria are very important and play a major role in our living world.

The Protist Kingdom has organism of many different shapes and sizes. In this diverse kingdom there are several groups, that have vast differences. However, they all share some common traits. For example, they all have cells with one or more nuclei.

Lesson 3

Objective: The students will be able to:

*describe the way monerans and protist affect and interact with other organisms.

Engage: Have students read the ingredients list on a yogurt. then allow for the students to taste the yogurt. After many of the students have tasted the yogurt inform them how bacteria is used in making yogurt and other foods.

Explore: What Lives in Pond Water? Explore! Activity in text page 259.

1.Students will make a wet mount slide of a drop of pond water. 2. They will then observe the slide under low and high power of the microscope. if the teacher has a Video "Flex Cam" microscope display a slide on the television screen as a reference. 3. Compare this slide of pond water with a wet mount slide of aged tap water. 4. Record observations. 6. Facilitate a discussion of students observations.

Explain: The teacher will expose the students to a variety of bacteria, including disease causing bacteria and cyanobacteria that provide food and oxygen to organisms in lakes and ponds. The teacher will also expose students to a variety of protist: plant-like, animal-like and fungus-like; through this the teacher will be able to explain these organisms beneficial and not so beneficial interactions with other organisms. (See text pages 257-262)

Elaborate: Have students find other foods and things that bacteria and protist positive interactions with.

Evaluate: Have students create concept map of the classification of monerans and protist and their interactions with other organisms.
