SYNOPSIS OF THE LESSON

The site is comprised of a unit which was developed through the 5 E's. The 5 E's consist of:

  1. Engagement: includes a selection of activities which will engage students' interest in the unit.
  2. Exploration: includes an activity to allow students to describe, draw, color and label the sensory receptors of the skin. Includes an activity which allows students to use the microscope to view slides of skin receptors . Teacher will facilitate student/teacher discussion of microscope slide using the flex camera, an Apple Macintosh Computer and a video projector. Students will draw and label each slide in their Science Journal.
  3. Explanation: teacher will share facts on the 5 senses which will facilitate student/teacher discussion on the subject
  4. Elaboration: includes a 1-2 day lab on reaction time and the brain. Students will have the opportunity to use their data to create graphs results using Microsoft Excel.
  5. Evaluation: Assessment 1 - Students will draw and label a sensory receptor and a brain. Students will label the sensory receptor and the brain identifying the correct sections. Assessment 2 - Each group will create a puzzle (with pieces) that consist of the parts of the brain that control the 5 senses. Puzzle pieces must identify each area of the brain the controls the 5 senses. Students should be able to complete a puzzle from another group. Assessment 3 - Students will create flash cards. One side of the flash card will have a picture of one of the five senses. The other side of the flash card will have an explanation of the process which each sense has to complete in order to function. Students will use flash cards to quiz each group.
