Explanation

At this point the teacher should introduce vocabulary relative to mitosis, and attach the correct terms to the diagrams of mitosis.

Activity 1: approximately 15 minutes

Materials Needed: Vocabulary Sheets(tdepending upon teacher style, the vocabulary words may include definitions, or the teacher can go over the definitions with the class and add the definitions as the class moves through the vocabulary. The teacher may want to reverse the sequence of Activity 1 and Activity 2 of the Explanation cycle.

1. Distribute vocabulary sheets with given vocabulary terms.

2. With the class review the terms and definitions.

Activity 2: approximately 25 minutes

Materials: It depends upon the learner and teaching styles. It is recommended that overheads of the stages of mitosis be reproduced and copies made for individual students. Approved Science textbooks and/or posters with diagrams and explanations may be used instead or in conjunction.

1. Distribute copies of unlabeled cell division stages. On overhead, review with students what they see happening in each stage.

2. Direct the students to label their copy of mitosis as you the teacher label the stages and cell parts of each stage. As you label, discuss with the students the form and function of each stage and cell part.

Activity 3: approximately 15-20 minutes This activity may be used for informal assessment, and may also be used as an homework assignment.

Materials Needed: paper, pencils for students

1. Direct students to write a summary of mitosis. Their summary should also include a diagram of the process. The summary and/or diagram should include all of the given vocabulary terms.

2. If time permits, you may have the class share their responses.

 

Activity 4a: Mitosis Whitefish Lab approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

 

Materials Needed: class set of : microscopes, prepared slides of onion mitosis, whitefish mitosis (slides may be ordered from Carolina Biological supply co.) paper, pencil, lab sheets, colored pencils,

Have a set routine for setting up stations to complete this activity.

1. Distribute lab sheets, group students and review expectations and procedures with students.

2. Instruct students to review and complete lab sheet for homework if students need more time.
