Engagement for Activity 1: 20-25 minutes approximatelyMaterials Needed: paper, pencil, blackboard or chart paper for recording responses
This is an activity to motivate the students and to help the students understand that mitosis is a process that follows specifc steps. If the steps are not followed in correct sequence, then mitosis cannot be completed correctly. The students will need to be grouped in cooperative groups of four.
3 minutes: Direct the students to independently list the names of as many dance titles that they can think of on a piece of paper. After about a minute and a half, ask the students to share their ideas with the class. Record student responses on the blackboard, chart paper or overhead for all students to see. The teacher may also add to list with responses the students may not think of such as hokey pokey, ballet, tango, etc.
1 minute: Direct the students to look at the list and think which dance they would like to demonstrate for the class.
5-8 minutes: Direct the students to work in their groups and select a dance to demonstrate. The groups need to have a recorder and each group needs to list the steps that must be followed to complete the dance. You may want to provided large paper and magic markers for the recorders to to record the dance title and dance steps that can be displayed for the class. After agreeing on the steps/stages of the dance they have selected, the students then need to practice their dance routines. Instruct the class that their demonstration must be about 30 seconds to 1 minute in length and must demonstrate the stages/steps of the dance.
5-8 minutes: Call on each group. The recorder should identify the dance selected by his/her group. If the students used large butcher paper for recording dance steps, the recorded group dances can be taped on the wall or blackboard. Ask each group to demonstrate their dance routines/steps.
5 minutes: In class discussion, ask the class to identify what all the dances had in common. Ask the students to identify what can happen if everyone doing the dance does not know all of the steps. (ie. the dance was "messed up," couldn't be completed) Say to the class that they are going to learn a new dance routine that has four basic steps/stages. It is the dance of the chromosomes: Mitosis.
