You may use these karyotypes to go directly to the Primate Cytogenetics Network.

Materials per student group

  1. One worksheet of a human karyotype either male or female cut into sections. Use the link to the Primate Cytogenetics Network to download a karyotype.
  2. glue stick
  3. construction paper
  4.  

Procedure:

  1. Carefully empty the contents of the envelope onto your construction paper.
  2. Sort the chromosomes by size from largest to smallest
  3. Count the number of chromosomes and record on your activity sheet.
  4. Using the banding and the placement of the centromeres(shown by dotted lines) match each pair of chromosomes.
  5. Once you are sure you have matched the correct homologous chromosomes glue them onto your paper to create a karyotype.
