 Dr. Catherine Collier

James Crawford is Executive Director of the National Association for Bilingual Education. Previously he worked as an independent writer, lecturer, and consultant specializing in language and education policy. His latest book, Educating English Learners: Language Diversity in the Classroom, 5th ed. (Bilingual Educational Services, 2004), is widely used in teacher-training courses.

His other major works include: At War with Diversity: U.S. Language Policy in an Age of Anxiety (Multilingual Matters, 2000); Best Evidence: Research Foundations of the Bilingual Education Act (National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education, 1997); Hold Your Tongue: Bilingualism and the Politics of "English Only" (Addison-Wesley, 1992); and Language Loyalties: A Source Book on the Official English Controversy (University of Chicago Press, 1992). In the mid-1980s he served as Washington editor of Education Week.

Crawford has consulted for numerous organizations and institutions including Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Arizona State University College of Education, Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Stanford Working Group on Federal Programs for Limited -English-Proficient Students. He serves on the editorial boards of Language Policy and the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism.
