WOMEN'S GOLF GAINS VARSITY STATUS AT WESTERN MARYLAND

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- McDaniel College has elevated the women's golf team to varsity status after just one year as a club sport.

The addition of women's golf gives Western Maryland 24 varsity teams, 12 men's and 12 women's, competing in the Division III Centennial Conference.

Mike Diehl will continue in his dual role as head coach of the women's team and assistant coach of the men's. J. Scott Moyer, men's head coach for the past 14 years, will oversee both programs as Western Maryland's director of golf.

Both teams have the luxury of an on-campus practice facility, the nine-hole Western Maryland Golf Club.

"I think there's enough interest at the high school level for us to be as successful in women's golf as we are in men's," said Moyer, who's guided the men to two conference titles in the past three years and to two recent NCAA championship berths, the first for any Maryland college in any division. "That's what we're gearing all our efforts toward&emdash;to having a successful women's program."

"Winning is our goal. We're constantly getting calls and letters from people interested in women's golf, so I know we can do a good job."

The schedule will be beefed up from the 1999-2000 slate, which had the women playing in two fall tournaments and three spring events.

In the fall, the Green Terror women finished third at the Dickinson Invitational and fourth at their own McDaniel College Fall Invitational. This spring they wound up sixth at the McDaniel College Spring Invitational, took third at the Gettysburg Invitational and tied for fifth at the Dickinson Invitational.

WESTERN MARYLAND SOPHOMORE WINS CONFERENCE TITLE

BERLIN, Md. -- Western Maryland sophomore Seth Aldridge won the individual crown but the defending champion Green Terror settled for second place as a team Sunday at the 6th annual Centennial Conference golf championship at Eagles Landing Golf Club near Ocean City.

Muhlenberg won the team title with a 45-hole total of 805, five strokes better than Western Maryland and eight better than third-place Gettysburg. The Mules tied Ursinus for the title in 1997 and finished second to Western Maryland last year.

The tournament was shortened from the scheduled 54 holes when lightning halted the first of three rounds Friday.

Aldridge, a native of Dover, Del., led throughout the tournament and turned in the low score in every round. His 184 (35-75-74) topped Rob Bishop of Ursinus by eight strokes and Mike Gross of Franklin & Marshall by 12.

Aldridge, a transfer from American University, came within one shot of tying the league record for margin of victory and gave Western Maryland its third individual crown. Brian Barry won the title in 1994 and Tony Worm last year.
